One of the unfortunate things about vacations, besides that they end, is that all of the fabulous pictures that a person takes are put in a box, or saved on a hard drive, or left in an envelope, and when they are looked at by the next of kin, no one knows what that vacation really meant to the people who attended. There are very few opportunities to involve children in a grown-up activity and introduce them to a wonderful hobby. But, one of the great scrapbooking ideas begins with family vacations.

Start making scrapbooking plans before you leave on vacation. Involve your children in the activity by talking about what a scrapbook is, visit some Internet or land-based shops and look at the many possibilities for turning plain pictures into a wonderful, expression of fun and adventure.

Before you leave, get disposable cameras for all of the members of the family. Point and shoot disposable cameras are not expensive and will allow everyone in the family to participate in capturing the vacation. Distributing a camera to each child before you leave and having extras packed to distribute during the trip will give each child the opportunity to contribute their art to the project when you return home.

After returning home and getting the pictures back, selecting the scrapbook will be a group project. If the family goes to Disneyland, a Disney scrapbook will be the perfect place to capture your vacation. Select different colored scrapbooking background pages for each child so that their pages will be easy to see when the book has been compiled.

By having scrapbooking background pages and journaling pages, each member of the family will be able to contribute to the fabulous vacation. When completed your book will have the reflections of each child in writing or pictures and their own special notes about what the vacation meant to them.

Providing special decorative papers and punches will make the experience even more fun. Carrying through the scrapbooking rule that there are no rules when being creative, providing each child with the tools they need to create their own unique pages will be a rewarding and fulfilling way to introduce them to the wonderful world of scrapbooking.

When you are compiling the book and have put it on the shelf, you may not think much about it. But, when your five year old is thirty and you take your scrapbook down from the shelf and read the inscriptions and look at the pictures captured by that child, you will truly appreciate the value of beginning this glorious hobby.

There are very few things in life that we can do that will have a positive effect on us each time that we revisit them. But, scrapbooks are compilations of wonderful memories that make you smile each time you look at them. Especially when you have involved your children and friends in the activity of creating a book that is packed with great memories.
